Today, Airalo, the world’s leading travel eSIM platform, released its 2026 North American Travel Report, uncovering major shifts in how Americans and Canadians traveled abroad over the past year. Drawing from millions of international eSIM purchases, the report highlights a clear departure from traditional summer hotspots in favor of temperate coolcations, micro-trips, affordable regional destination dupes, and specialized passion-driven travel ranging from South Korea’s wellness boom to Central America’s adventure retreats.
“Across North America, we saw distinct behavioral shifts this year that redefine standard travel patterns,” said Emma Brooks, Growth Director, North America at Airalo. “While both markets leaned heavily into Asia-Pacific growth, travelers took a highly strategic approach to inflation, prioritizing high-value, immersive stays in Southeast Asia and Central America where their dollar stretched further. As we look toward 2027, travelers are ditching overcrowded, overheated traditional hubs for secondary destinations that offer richer, more intentional experiences.”
Key Insights from the Airalo 2026 North American Travel Report:
- Ditching the Heat for Coolcations: Extreme summer temperatures and overcrowded European hubs accelerated a shift toward climate-adaptive travel. In the U.S., growth concentrated heavily in temperate European escapes compared to 2025, most notably Scotland (+49.7%), Malta (+31.3%), and Albania (+29.9%), while traditional warm-weather options like Mexico pulled back (-9.7% overall and -21% in peak summer). Canadians similarly favored moderate European choices, boosting Spain (+7.3%) over overheated Mediterranean spots.
- Asia-Pacific Dominance & The K-Beauty Boom: Asia-Pacific emerged as the fastest-growing region for North American travelers. Driven by beauty, medical tourism, and wellness retreats, eSIM orders for South Korea skyrocketed +65.9% in the U.S. and +88.1% in Canada. While Japan maintained its #1 spot for Americans (+10.5%) and #2 for Canadians, its pace cooled noticeably compared to last year’s 50% spike, leaving the door open for a new frontrunner by 2027. Meanwhile, Thailand (+10.9% U.S. / +6.1% Canada) newly entered the Top 10 for both countries, with China (+33.4%) also making a strong return for the U.S.
- Economic Pressures Force Destination Dupes & Value-Driven Immersion: Faced with rising costs, travelers swapped high-cost spots for emerging markets offering high-end experiences for less. Canadians embraced Central America and island escapes, led by jumps in Panama (+28.3%), Nicaragua (+27.4%), El Salvador (+24.4%), and the Azores (+51.5%), alongside strong Southeast Asian gains in Vietnam (+30.7%) and the Philippines (+15.5%). Simultaneously, U.S. travelers turned away from high-cost luxury destinations, driving a -43.5% drop in orders to the Maldives in favor of accessible, cost-effective global alternatives.
- The Rise of the Micro-Trip & 2027 Horizon Outlook: Economic pressures shrank traveler itineraries in 2026, creating a shift toward shorter, high-frequency trips. North American purchases pivoted away from month-long plans as quick-hit 7-day packages surged from less than 1% of purchases in 2025 to nearly 27% in the U.S. and over 20% in Canada in 2026. Looking ahead to 2027, Airalo forecasts this demand for efficient travel will be accelerated by new, fuel-efficient aircraft, which are turning multi-leg journeys into direct nonstops to secondary international connection cities.
